Dubbel Chimay, also known as Chimay Red (though I thought this is like a "brown ale"). Well, the 75cl bottle is
very nice and its always nice to pop open the cork with a sound :)
There is pressure in the bottle like in sparkling wines, but gladly the stuff
within doesn’t pop out the bottle too. Brown/coppery outlook and obviously a
lot of head. Scent is not very colourful – just like sweet plum or apricot or
something like that. Taste is kinda easy and nice, not over the top sweet as I
feared it would be. Of course there is that malty sweet fruitiness that follows
the scent but also a dry finish of hops, nice. Some Belgian yeasty vibe too,
but very mildly. Alcohol warms, but doesn’t bother at all.
This sure
feels like a beer from old world (and actually this is the oldest of Chimay
beers). No odd experiments, but quality dubbel with old recipe. Nice in its own
way, though not my favorite in any way - I'm more of a modern world man in beer drinking too, this feels a bit lame for such a grandeur presentation. Still very much ok, though Chimay monks
brew also much better beers.
*** OK
