Ruosniemen Vuorineuvos

Splendid Finnish indie/craft Imperial Stout. Scent has some serious herbal liquorice flavors. Nice! Taste gives more of that lovely liquorice (which I like a LOT) and whole lot of other tasty sensations, that are common for imperial stouts - not too much burned flavors, which I like.  A HUGE Columbus hoppy ending, very dry and hoppy, but pleasant, because of the full-bodied malty sweetness that needs to be put in place. This is what they say about Columbus in beerlegends.com and I have to say, I totally agree, what it did to this stout: ”Columbus Hops makes a great dual purpose hops in beer. It brings both a bitterness kick to the table as well as strong dreamy aroma. Columbus brings a 14%-16% alpha acid rating to the table, making it ideal for laying the bitter foundation for beers such as Pale Ales, India Pale Ales, Stouts, and anything Imperial. In the same capacity this variety is commonly used for late-boil or dry hopping for its herbal, earthy character. Th...

Prykmestar SavuVehnä

Well, I’m not a fan of wheat beers in general, nor smoked beers. Only exceptions of excellence have been Finnish Indie products of VASP, which brewed also this beer. Prykmestar WehnäBock is a splendid wheat beer and Prykmestar SavuKataja an excellent strong smoked beer. I also enjoyed their Prykmestar Savu with food in particular. What about this combination of my not-favorite styles? Well, not my favorite I’m afraid. Not too smoky, not too wheaty, but still a bit unpleasant even, malty sweetness and smoky aroma, but almost a bit watered down feel, not very enjoyable drink without food. Maybe with some food this would work well. Now this is a bit average or even poor for my taste buds. ** Drinkable

Malmgård Barley Wine

Well, I’m a big Malmgård fan. They make quality beer with quality ingredients and clear style without too much experimenting. They have taste – good taste – in beer-making. They have not always succeeded to conquer my tastebuds, but I’m always excited about having a new Malmgård taste. First this feels a lot like many other barley wines – malty, sweet, port wine/liquor –feel. Almost room-temperature (which means 18-19 celsius in my old house) and I expect this to be too sweet by the nutty smell. “Not at all!” shouts the taste – and aftertaste kills the sweetness with hoppy attack. VERY dry finish. Feels like double IPA with aftertaste. I actually prefer IPA – and more so APA – than DIPA, but this dry hoppy finish gives a very nice counterpart to a strong malty body and sweetness. Not my favorite style of beers, but definitely a great modern example of barley wines with enough hoppy dryness to tackle the sweetness and fullness of a malty body. Complex beer, not easy for sure, but act...

Hiisi Aarni

Beautiful bottle. Beautiful name* :)   Pine, citrus, fruits in lovely scent. Possibly first ever taste of this Finnish Indie Brewery’s beers, so I’m very excited. Quite easy drinkable, tasty, a bit sweet – maybe Rye malts is the reason for it – and nicely dry in aftertaste. Very nice all-round beer giving malty, sweet, dry and hoppy tastes. At the same time nicely complex but still very very easy-drinkable. Nicely balanced, very enjoyable. I think this might be the best rye-malt -infused beer I've tasted. Yay Hiisi, nice work! Hope I will have a chance to buy and drink your beers more in here backwoods of Finland too. **** Great * My 6yo son is called Aarni :)

Oppigårds Every Day IPA

Refreshing citruslike IPA! Columbus, El Dorado, Citra and Simcoe hops. 4,6% alc vol, pint in a local bar. I had this while writing a wedding greetings card and the beer went nicely along the happy happy joy joy –feelgood lines I was writing. Thought that this might be a good grill-food summer beer to be sessioned in the sunlight and I was having it in the middle of the cold and dark Finnish winter.  A good beer, no doubt, though I never got the “wow”-factor or had any other sensations than “good, fruity hops” out of it. Not complaining, just saying. Not every beer can be an exceptional piece of beer-making :) ***+ OK
